North Haven, CT (September 28th, 2023) – Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) announced today that it has won a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I award from the Navy to develop and integrate scalable and modular solid sorbent-based flue-gas carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions for shipboard use. The project will focus on developing PCI’s solid sorbent-based CCS technology for use on ships, including naval vessels. PCI’s approach offers to significantly enhance carbon capture rates and efficiency.
PCI’s CCS solution offers several key advantages over existing methods, including improved capture rates and enhanced thermal behavior. Unlike conventional approaches that require extensive energy-intensive compression or liquification, PCI’s technology offers a more energy-efficient storage solution. Notably, PCI’s carbon capture sorbent has shown durability even in the presence of engine exhaust contaminants, making it a good solution for naval vessels.
The maritime industry is essential to international trade, as it is responsible for transporting approximately 80% of all goods. This vital industry also contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, with container ships emitting approximately 1 billion metric tons of CO2 annually, an amount equivalent to 3% of total global emissions. By focusing on reducing emissions from naval ships, PCI’s initiative opens a pathway to emissions reduction that extends to the broader maritime shipping sector.
During Phase I, PCI will further develop its CCS sorbent technology, building on prior successful development through multiple Department of Energy and NASA SBIR programs. This project will address challenges posed by turbine exhaust contaminants and brine, evaluating their impact on both capture and storage. Furthermore, PCI will explore integration issues related to space, weight, and power availability on selected ships.
Kevin Burns, President of PCI states, “Our approach aligns with the Navy’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by integrating CCS solutions on naval fleets, with spinoff opportunities for improved carbon capture for the maritime shipping industry at large. We’re looking forward to working with the Navy and with potential partners in the shipping industry. ”
