Modular System for Destruction of High Flow Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) by Oxidizing Low Concentration Methane

PCI developed an innovative modular system to mitigate the release of ventilation air methane (VAM) associated with coal and other minerals production. PCI’s VAM destruction technology combines three key elements: (1) short contact time, low thermal mass reactor design to achieve maximal total conversion in a small volume, (2) catalyst formulation and loading to minimize the required operating temperature of the catalytic oxidation, and (3) advanced system design and architecture to maximize the degree to which released heat is retained and recirculated in between elements. ​

The technology can oxidize methane concentrations below 1% with >99% efficiency and is being developed in several embodiments, such as:​

  1. Recuperative Catalytic Oxidizer (1,000 – 2,000 SCFM), trailer-able, pilot system designed, built, and sited at a coal mine for field test.​
  2. Augmented – Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer – As an RTO enhancement for 50,000 SCFM systems to improve methane destruction >99%. ​

Implementation of these technologies will lead to a significant reduction in the impact of mines producing methane emissions on global climate change. ​
