Carbon Capture at the Nano Scale Wins DOE Award

North Haven, CT (July 7th, 2020carboncapture– Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) announced today it has won a two-year Department of Energy (DOE) Phase IIA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to further develop a High-efficiency Post Combustion Carbon Capture System for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and other point sources.

Fossil fuel power plants provide most of the world’s electricity and are a major source of the manmade carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions driving global warming. Affordably capturing and storing the CO2 to be used in chemicals or fuels offers one way to reduce global warming and extend the value of America’s fossil energy reserves, but current state of the art CO2 capture technology imposes a high energy cost.

PCI’s new  regenerable high capacity, high efficiency nanosorbent system can selectively capture and transfer CO2 from power plant exhaust with as much as 85% energy savings compared to conventional amine technology, thereby substantially reducing the cost of carbon capture.

PCI’s solution can be applied to new power generation systems or retrofitted to existing systems. The project will build on prior Phase II success to further develop the technology with support from other organizations, including testing at the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC).

According to Dr. Codruta Loebick, the Principal Investigator, “The Phase II project demonstrated our regenerable CO2 capture system can eliminate 75% of the energy cost required in conventional CO2 capture systems. The Phase IIA project will build upon this success, targeting 85% energy savings and other gains, with the goal of further maturing the technology and reducing carbon capture and compression cost to below the DOE 2035 target of $30/ton.”

President Kevin Burns adds, “Substantially lowering the cost of CO2 capture offers a route to controlling global warming, but the high required energy of conventional CO2 capture presents a daunting cost barrier. What we’re doing here could make a big difference. We will also need success by others in developing viable uses for the captured CO2. This is a swing-for-the fences effort, but we’re working the science in a new approach, with potential to create an important new tool for improving our 21st century. We’ve got some interested companies working with us. With success this will open up a lot of opportunity, and we welcome the inquiry of other companies that may have interest in participating.”
