Navy Project to Develop New Aircraft Fuel Filter Technology

North Haven, CT (January 16th, 2020) Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) announced it has won a Navy Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to develop a compact, low pressure drop filter system for selective and efficient removal of metal contaminants from jet fuel without impacting the additive package or other fuel properties.

The Navy has experienced copper leaching that introduces contamination to JP-5 fuels.  Dissolved copper in the fuels affects fuel decomposition, leading to coking, impaired engine performance and increased engine maintenance.

In Phase I, PCI validated its new replaceable filter that integrates two technologies together and enables >99% copper removal at high throughput and low pressure drop in a compact volume. These benefits are realized with nanostructured sorbents in a unique design targeted to removal of specific contaminants.

According to Dr. Codruta Loebick, the Principal Investigator, “We had some great results in the Phase I of this project, showing the promise of our approach. In Phase II the technology will be scaled from laboratory scale to an advanced design, encompassing flow rates and form factors expected for integration.”

President Kevin Burns adds, “Copper in fuel introduces catalytic effects that can lead to coking, impaired performance capability and increased engine maintenance.  Currently no solutions are available to directly mitigate the effect of copper, and replacement of the fuel piping is expensive.  Our filter offers a low cost and retrofittable solution for improved performance and reduced maintenance costs.  We’re also looking to other DoD and commercial fueling systems for application of the technology.
