North Haven, CT (September 5th, 2020) – Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) announced today it has been awarded an Army Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II program, entitled “Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Power System ” for development of a novel, modular fuel cell system based on very high power-density stacks with internal reforming. The SOFC stack is targeted to have high power density, fast start-up, thermal shock resistance, and be more tolerant of thermal cycling. This offers a practical choice for use in dual-use generation systems requiring compact and lightweight footprint, fuel flexibility, fast response, and durable operation.

During Phase I of the project, PCI developed underlying SOFC designs which offer multiple notable advances for small unit power applications as compared to current internal combustion engines or alternative PEM-FC and SOFC systems. The stack design offers improved performance of the system and much more compact size while also improving system robustness against typical operating constraints like thermal cycling, vibrations, and re-oxidation, enabling for a variety of military and civilian applications. During Phase II, PCI will further develop the technology to meet specific power needs for dismounted soldier power and small tactical electric power. High power density means the power source could also meet the power needs of higher power-density UAV and UGV systems.

Kevin Burns, President of PCI, commented: “We’re proud of the exceptional work done to develop and implement this new fuel cell technology. As we work to make it yet more robust and compact, we are expanding the range of potentially attractive applications.”

Precision Combustion, Inc. is a clean energy and environmental technology company developing new reactors and systems for energy and environmental sector applications.
