North Haven, CT (April 27th, 2020) – Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) announced today that it has been awarded a Department of Defense Rapid Innovation Fund (RIF) contract to develop a lightweight, logistics-fueled hybrid generator family, ranging from 1 kW to 5 kW in output. These advanced generators utilize PCI’s patented octane-boosting technology to efficiently operate on military logistic fuels including JP-8, DF-2, Jet-A, Kerosene, and gasoline, significantly enhancing reliability and reducing maintenance requirements.
PCI’s innovative approach addresses critical operational challenges currently faced by military generators, notably oil dilution issues and frequent shutdowns due to incomplete combustion. Unlike traditional solutions, PCI’s compact fuel reformer technology instantly converts JP-8 and other low-octane fuels into high-octane fuels, enabling reliable spark-ignited engine operation without costly engine modifications or complex starting procedures.
Key features of these advanced generators include electric start, low emissions, hybridized operation with integrated battery system, remote and load-dependent start-stop capabilities, and significantly reduced weight and size. This technology also provides parallel operation capability, allowing multiple generators to work together seamlessly, creating flexible power solutions suitable for diverse mission requirements.
The program supports developing three generator models: a 1 kW model, a 2 kW model, and a 5 kW model, weighing between 20 lbs to 100 lbs. These generators promise substantial operational advantages, including extended operation times per gallon of fuel, dramatically reduced weight over current solutions, and improved logistics through simplified maintenance and fuel flexibility.
Kevin Burns, President of PCI, commented, “Our lightweight, logistics-fueled generators address a longstanding need for lightweight power generation in austere military environments. This project represents a significant advancement in deployable energy technology, enhancing mission readiness and reducing operational burden on Special Operations Forces (SOF) Medical Teams and other deployed units.”
