North Haven, CT (October 14th, 2024) – Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) announced that it has won a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I award from the Army for its cutting-edge JP-8 Fueled Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology for Electrified Combat Vehicles. This innovative solution enhances the capabilities of next-generation combat vehicles by providing efficient, quiet, and highly reliable power for propulsion and soldier support systems.

The PCI fuel cell-based design efficiently converts energy from liquid fuels, such as JP-8, into electrical energy. This system offers over twice the fuel-to-propulsion efficiency of conventional internal combustion engines, enabling silent operation of combat vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), and soldier-wearable power systems. This quiet and fuel-efficient solution significantly reduces the carbon footprint and enhances operational range on the battlefield.
“Our advanced SOFC technology represents a new frontier in military power generation,” said Kevin Burns, President of PCI. “The system delivers extended silent watch duration, reduced fuel costs, and emissions, all while meeting the Army’s growing energy demands.”

“This power system is uniquely engineered to meet the Army’s demand for resilient and fuel-flexible energy sources,” said Anthony Anderson, Director of Marketing and Business Development at PCI. “Our technology combines compactness, durability, and quiet performance to deliver decisive advantages across mobility and tactical operations.” With its ability to operate quietly and offer fuel flexibility, PCI’s technology offers to replace traditional noisy and heavy generators with more efficient and truly long duration silent watch. The JP-8 fueled system is designed for diverse applications, from powering combat vehicles and auxiliary power units (APUs) to supporting soldier-portable tactical power generation. Its fuel flexibility also opens the door for future fuels such as hydrogen and low-carbon alternatives, making it a robust platform for current and future military and commercial energy needs.
