Precision Combustion Inc. Wins Army Award for Hybrid Electric Powertrain, Power and Propulsion Systems

North Haven, CT (March 10, 2025)Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) announced today that it has been awarded an Army Hybrid Electric Powertrain, Power and Propulsion Systems (HEPPS) Phase I award to develop a fuel-flexible, solid-state hybrid electric power and propulsion system. The program advances PCI’s multifunctional electrochemical cells that convert the energy in liquid fuels to electricity, using a process-intensified design combining mechanical, thermochemical, electrochemical, and electrical functions. The architecture is designed for fast startups, lightweight and compact form factor, scalability, high efficiency, and fuel-flexibility, supporting low-signature power generation from logistic fuels, propane, kerosene, and sustainable future fuels.

Phase I work will experimentally validate component performance and scalability. Building on PCI’s experience with advanced SOFC-battery hybrid prototypes and assuming Phase I success, Phase II will be proposed to demonstrate a HEPPS configuration in a target application as a common-core power system that can be tailored to multiple use cases.

“Our solid-state hybrid approach is built for fast startup, compact size, low weight, low signature, and fuel-flexible operations,” said Kevin Burns, President of PCI. “By combining robust electrochemical cell materials with a process-intensified, scalable architecture, we aim to deliver efficient power and propulsion with lower logistics burden and strong path-to-deployment across multiple Army vehicle platforms.”

Commercial potential includes scalability from kW to MW with MIL-SPEC compliant power output, operation on current logistic fuels and future sustainable fuels, and application pathways spanning electrified military vehicles, soldier/squad power, electrified commercial aviation, space power generation, and automotive platforms. PCI plans to advance TRL through prototypes and demonstrations with partners to support transition to fielded systems.
